Hoodoo, Haunts, and Horror

New Orleans Hoodoo

Some of my favorite book research involves travel, and I milked my trip to New Orleans for The Hoodoo Detective, book 6 of my Riga Hayworth urban fantasy/paranormal mystery novels.

Here's some fun stuff I gleaned:

The Hoodoo Detective - Obituary

The Obituary

Not just a newspaper article, an Obituary actually a new Orleans drink. Invented at Lafitte's Blacksmith Shop, it's as lethal as it looks, and surprisingly easy to mix. Just shake it up in a mixing glass with ice, and strain.

2 oz. gin

1/4 oz dry vermouth 1/4 ounce absinthe

But my trip was about more than soaking up the New Orleans atmosphere. I also got some research done on hoodoo, a uniquely American melange of Afro-Carribean and European folk magic.
